The Root Chakra (Muladhara): Complete Explanation & Meaning

Root Chakra

Introduction

Have you ever felt as if you are losing touch with yourself? Maybe you have observed yourself being anxious without any particular reason? Or perhaps your self esteem is not too good? Most of us have struggled with these issues. If you answered yes to these questions, then chances are that your root chakra might be a bit imbalanced and requires re-alignment.

But what is root chakra? What does it mean for it to be ‘imbalanced’, and how to unblock root chakra? Let’s find out.

What are Chakras?

As per Yogic philosophy there are several points in our subtle body where the energy centers meet, and these are called the chakras. There are 7 main chakras in our body, arranged vertically from the base of our spine to the crown of our head. These are Muladhara, Swadhishthana, Manipuara, Anahat, Vishuddha, Ajneya, and Sahasrara chakras. Each of these have their own functions, location, mantras, and unique features.

What is the Root Chakra (Muladhara)?

Muladhara Chakra

As the word “root” itself shows, the root chakra is the one located at the very base of our spine. In Sanskrit, it is called Muladhara, which means base or root. We can understand the role of Muladhara chakra in our body as similar to the roots of a tree, as it gives structure and stability to our mind and body. It is responsible for our sense of safety, groundedness, self worth, and being in touch with ourselves. When this chakra is balanced, people feel lightness and a positive sense of self. However, an imbalanced muladhara is the cause of feeling disoriented or ungrounded. Some key features of the base chakra are:

  • Color: Deep red
  • Element: Earth
  • Mantra: LAM
  • Symbol: Four petaled lotus flower

Where is the Root Chakra Located?

The muladhara is our very first chakra and is located at the base of our spine in the tailbone area, which gives it the name “base chakra”. Specifically it is located at the perineum, between the anus and the genitals. It affects our lower body areas, including our lower abdomen, lower spine, legs, colon, and bladder.

What is the Symbol of Root Chakra (Muladhara)?

The symbol of the muladhara is a deep red, four petaled lotus with a square in the middle. This represents stability and survival. Inside the square is a downward pointing triangle which symbolises grounding force and the element earth. At the very centre the beej mantra “LAM” is written. The four petals of the lotus represent the four aspects of consciousness, which are Manas (mind), Buddhi (intellect), Chitta (consciousness), and Ahamkara (ego).

Signs of an Imbalanced or Blocked Root Chakra

Since the Muladhara is associated with the sense of security and worth, its imbalance manifests in the form of instability and anxiousness. Root chakra imbalance looks like:

  • Frequent worry and anxiety over trivial matters
  • Feelings of insecurity or inferiority
  • Unexplained ache in lower back or abdomen
  • Feeling disoriented, out of touch with yourself
  • Reproductive and/or digestive issues
  • Emotional upheavals
  • Financial problems
  • Fear of abandonement
  • Extreme dependence on others or too much independence

Meaning of Root Chakra Healing

You might have heard the term “chakra healing” or “root chakra healing” in yoga circles or on social media, but what does it actually mean? How can you actually heal the muladhara? Is it a physical entity or organ inside us that can be balanced?

It might be a bit confusing at first, but the muladhara is not like a body part. It is not even a physical organ in the body. Rather, it is a point where our energy centers of the lower body meet or cluster together. However, these energy centers can get blocked or even get overactive due to certain disturbances in our lifestyle, dietary habits, emotional regulation, childhood development, and many other reasons. Root chakra healing is about correcting these imbalances so that we can get our base chakra into alignment.

How to Heal & Balance Your Root Chakra

Heal & Balance Root chakra

“Root chakra imbalance”, “healing” etc. may sound like complicated ideas, but the good news is that they are actually quite feasible. In fact, some ways of healing your root chakra are simple habits that we can inculcate in our daily lives. Some of these are:

Spending Time in Nature

Healing your root chakra starts with nature. Picture the last time you sat alone in a park. A cool breeze around you, birds chirping somewhere nearby, and the soft damp grass beneath you as you quietly absorb the serenity! Chances are, even imagining this made you relax. And this is exactly what happens when we spend time in nature. The clutter in our mind reduces and our stress hormones drop significantly. Studies in environmental psychology have also shown that being in nature even for a few minutes is beneficial for our well-being.

Practice Grounding Yoga Poses

The muladhara chakra is all about grounding and stability. So practicing grounding yoga asanas helps in re-balancing the root chakra. It is advised to practice yoga under a trained teacher or guru, but there are some asanas that you can safely practice on your own. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Balance the Root Chakra with Meditation

Another simple yet powerful way of balancing your base chakra is meditation. We often avoid starting meditation because we feel that we would not be able to sit still, but one does not need to be an expert to begin. We can start with even 5-10 minutes everyday. The process is not much difficult- sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes, and concentrate on any point that you choose. Let your thoughts come, and observe them without judgement. Observe and become aware of your breath. This is called a state of mindfulness. Mindfulness meditation and breathing exercises balance the muladhara and bring a sense of relief to the mind as well as the body. You can also chant the mantra of the muladhara chakra (LAM) while meditating.

Stable Lifestyle

The base chakra is about how stable and grounded we feel. But if our daily routine is irregular and messy, it ends up disturbing the muladhara more. So the way we live our everyday life actually matters here. Things like sleeping at a fixed time, eating properly, doing some form of physical activity, and keeping our surroundings clean help in bringing stability. These seem like such small habits, but they are essential for root chakra healing because over time they create a sense of balance and support the muladhara.

Reconnecting With the Body

The muladhara is linked with the physical body, so anything that brings attention back to the body helps. When we become more aware of simple bodily sensations, the base chakra slowly starts to re-align. This does not require anything complicated though, even light movement, basic stretching, walking slowly, or focusing on breathing can help in this. These practices are simple, but they bring attention back to the present moment. With time, this helps in building a sense of stability, which is what the muladhara stands for.

Sound Healing and Vibration Frequency Techniques

Have you ever noticed how certain sounds or music instantly make your body feel calmer? Sound-based practices work on a similar idea, using vibration to bring the mind and body back into balance. Sound is believed to influence the body’s energy because vibrations can affect both the mind and the nervous system. For the muladhara, sound frequencies around 396 Hz are used, as these frequencies are associated with releasing fear and encouraging grounding.

Dietetic Regulation for Root Chakra Healing

You are what you eat” because our diet and nutritional habits shape our behavior, personality, thoughts, feelings, and directly or indirectly influence almost every aspect of our life. If you want to balance your base chakra, then you must pay attention to the kind of food that you consume, and modify your diet accordingly. Here are some do’s and don’ts for your diet if you want to practice root chakra healing:

Do’s (What Balances the Muladhara)

  1. Eat grounding, earthy foods: Include root vegetables like carrots, potatoes, beetroot, radish. Foods that grow within the earth symbolically support grounding.
  2. Prefer warm, cooked meals: Warm foods signal safety and comfort to the body, and also help in digestion.
  3. Maintain regular meal timings: Try to have a fixed time for your meals everyday, as it will strengthen your sense of stability.
  4. Stay hydrated: Include warm drinks and herbal teas. Sip water slowly and mindfully instead of gulping it at once.
  5. Eat mindfully: Whenever you sit down to eat, stay grounded in the present moment. Pay attention to what you are eating.

Don’ts (What Disturbs the Muladhara)

  1. Avoid skipping meals: Regularly skipping meals, especially breakfast, puts stress on the body and can cause fatigue and tiredness.
  2. Limit excessive caffeine: Try to reduce your caffeine intake. Too much caffeine overstimulates the nervous system and makes you anxious and jittery. So try to keep caffeine intake within 100–200 mg per day for better grounding.
  3. Reduce junk food: Highly processed foods such as packaged drinks and snacks upset the digestive system and put strain on our health. They are also linked with emotional imbalance, so consuming excess junk food can disturb the muladhara chakra.
  4. Avoid eating in a distracted state: We are often in such a state of hurry or distraction that even while eating we are constantly thinking of something or the other. Such things seem small and insignificant, but they have a huge impact on our overall sense of stability and grounding. So avoid watching tv or scrolling on social media while eating. Instead, practice mindful eating.

Best Foods to Balance and Activate Muladhara Chakra & Energy

Best Food for Root Chakra
  • Grounding root vegetables: The element of the muladhara is earth, so you should add root vegetables like beetroot, potatoes, carrots, turnips, and radishes to your diet. Onion and garlic are also root vegetables, but if your root chakra is overactive then you should try to minimize them.
  • Naturally red foods: Foods like pomegranates, cherries, red apples, and tomatoes are naturally red, which matches the frequency of the root chakra. Adding these to your diet will be beneficial to balance the muladhara’s energy.
  •  Protein-rich foods: There are plenty of sources of protein. For plant based protein you should go for beans, lentils, and tofu. Walnuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds and sunflowers seeds are also good sources of protein. Animal based protein is found in eggs and lean red meat.

An important point to note is that the amount of these foods should be taken according to your nutritional requirements, lifestyle, temperament, and other factors.

Emotional Health and Journalling

We mostly focus on our physical health for root chakra healing, but our emotional health is just as important, because emotional regulation and the muladhara are linked with each other. This is why an imbalance muladhara causes fear of abandonment, instability, and extreme dependence. To balance the base chakra, we must also work on our emotions as well. Journaling is a useful tool to regulate and process our emotions. Here are some journaling prompts that you can use:

  • “When do I feel unsafe even when nothing is wrong?”
  • “What does ‘home’ mean to me?”
  • “Where in life am I constantly in survival mode?”
  • “What does safety feel like for me?”

Final Thoughts

Chakras influence our physical and mental health, and especially the root chakra is truly important for our sense of stability. Things that seem minor to us, like lifestyle, habits, meals, routine, etc. have a huge impact on the balance of our chakras. If we do not pay attention to our chakras, then we will have to face a number of problems in various domains of our life.

Balancing all other chakras can only be possible when we start by regulating our base chakra. So we must identify the signs of a blocked or overactive root chakra and work toward stabilising it. After all, a healthy root makes a healthy tree!
